Over the next few days, popular music site Pitchfork (MP3s, reviews, tour dates, etc.) will name the top 200 songs the 1990s.
http://pitchfork.com/news/39896-presenting-the-top-200-tracks-of-the-1990s/
So, for those who are interested (and familiar with Pitchfork), name three songs you predict will be in the top ten. Then follow the list as it is unveiled and see if you were right!
I say:
Pavement – "Range Life"
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1VVj1zqbWpU
Pulp – "Common People"
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DqgXzPfAxjo
Radiohead – "Paranoid Android"
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T9zWLrpkTAo
Jerry: I’m sure a few RATM songs will be included. Slayer…not so much. Pitchfork is geared more towards alternative and indie rock, hip hop, and electronica.
OutKast – Rosa Parks (They gave B.O.B. by OutKast the title of best track of the 2000s.)
Digable Planets – Rebirth of Slick (Cool Like Dat)
Rage Against the Machine – Killing in the Name
I’m not familiar with Pitchfork but with 200 tracks, these 3 are unavoidable.
edit – after reading some of their stuff, it seems like they hate Metal. I’m probably wrong about Slayer and MAYBE RATM but I doubt it cuz they love Rap.
edit 2 – Yeah I fixed that.
I’ve heard mixed reviews, and I don’t really like crowds or long queues but it’s too late to back out now. Plane tickets bought now.
So what would be some valuable tips about visiting the Shang Expo? Two guys travelling on a budget. Food has been mentioned in pavillions. Are the costs reasonable, or should be bring packed lunch? What side trips do you suggest? (It’s an 8 day trip). Also arriving at 11pm, pretty bad timing, what do you suggest?
I recently went with my family and trust me, it is crowded and they have long lines. It starts at 9 am and ends at 12 pm. Day time tickets are 168 RMB and can be bought at the Expo. Night tickets, sold at 4:30 pm, can be bought at 90 RMB also at the Expo. Find a hotel close to the Expo. Also, for China’s pavilion, you need reservation tickets. To get these tickets, you must wake up really early to line up at the Expo. Unfortunately, we didn’t get to go, but if you are planning to, most people who want reservation tickets are waiting in line by 3-4 am. I don’t suggest eating there because it is expensive and it doesn’t taste so great. I suggest, if you are going during the day, to bring lunches. There are many convenience stores in Shanghai where you can by packed lunches (7/11, Lawson, Family Market) BUT do not bring any liquids of any kinds. They will be confiscated at the entrance. There are drinking fountains there if you wish to bring an empty water bottle and fill it up there. You may also by drinks as well. We went during the day, and trust me, it is very crowded. So after that, we went at night and it’s actually much better because there are beautiful scenic lights and the lines are shorter as well. There are 5 districts: A, B, C, D, and E. A is mostly Asian countries, B is more of Pacific countries, C is more of European countries, and D&E consists mostly of company pavilions and such (like cars, coca-cola, airlines, etc.). Outside of the Expo, you may find some people that sell little folding chairs. They’ll come in handy if you are standing in a long line. If you are taking the subway, which is very convenient and fast, make sure you pay attention to what time is the last subway, which is the time when most of the people leave as well so it’ll be crowded. Don’t be afraid to ask for help because there are a lot of volunteers standing under green umbrellas in green uniforms to help anyone out. You can’t miss ‘em. For side trips, you can visit the Huang Pu River and ride on the ferry at night, its very beautiful and you can see the Bund and the Oriental Pearl Tower, which is another you can visit as well. For shopping you can go to the People’s Square. There are malls, shops, restaurants, and movie theaters.Since you’re arriving late, make sure you have booked a hotel. You can find taxis pretty easily once you guys exit. Or if your hotel has a airport bus, you can ride those too. Hope this helped! If you need more info, just tell me.
I need to compose a set of brief paragraphs on the IR and review the top ten events it led up to. I’d like some opinions on how other people may place importance on some of the events it led up to.
1. Mass Production: The use of the Factory System allowed for mass production of textiles and other goods. This shifted people from production at home with the Put Out System, to production in large factories in cities. Mass production also allowed for lower prices on the good produced.
2. Big Business: As the Industrial Revolution grew, so did business. To meet the needs of this growth, business owners sold shares of their companies to stockholders who would share the profits and losses. The influx of capital allowed business to grow into corporations that had dealing in many different areas.
3. Laissez-Faire Economics: This was an economic philosophy begun by Adam Smith in his book, Wealth of Nations, that stated that business and the economy would run best with no interference from the government. This economic system dominated most of the Industrial Revolution.
4. Urbanization: People moved to towns and cities to be closer to the factories. Conditions were very poor during the early part of the Industrial Revolution, as factory workers lived in overcrowded buildings, with no sewage or sanitation services. This resulted in widespread disease.
5. Working Conditions: Factory workers worked very long hours, for little pay, under harsh conditions. Workers included children as young as 8, both male and female. Many people were injured or killed due to unsafe working conditions.
6. Societal Changes: New roles were defined for Middle Class men and women. MC men went to work in business, while MC women worked from home and cared for the family. The higher standard of living for the middle class meant that their children received some form of formal education. Working Class families faced many hardships due to poor living and working conditions, and most WC children never received an education.
7. Communism: Karl Marx wrote in The Communist Manifesto (1848) that all of human history is based on the conflict between the bourgeoisie (those who own the means of production) and the proletariat (working class). He predicted that the proletariat would rise up in a violent revolution to overthrow the bourgeoisie and create a society with an equal distribution of goods and services. This socialist theory would form the basis for the Bolshevik, Chinese, and Cuban Revolutions in the 20th Century.
8. Imperialism: Africa, China, India, South East Asia, and others were controlled by Europe to provide raw materials and new markets for industrialized goods. Imperialism had a negative effect on most of these cultures, and did not completely end until after World War II. Imperialism usually only benefited the European nations.
9. New Social Class Structure
Upper Class: Very rich industrial & business families. Old Noble class.
Upper Middle Class: Business people & professionals such as, lawyers & doctors.
Lower Middle Class: Other professionals such as, teachers, shop owners, and office workers.
Working Class: Factory workers and small farmers.
10. The Industrial Revolution was a major turning point in world history as it resulted in a complete change in society on all levels. Effects of the Industrial Revolutions were long reaching, and influenced many other cultures both positively and negatively.
I hope this helps
Good Luck and I hope you get an A, if this for a school report.

my hair is brown and kinda thick and kindaa long so yea thank you for all ur answers and opinions
(any makeup tips, by the way im 14)
I say leave it straight, and you should wear that top with a good and cute jacket, considering if the concert is out doors (or indoors) Either way It sucks having to be cold, so keep that in mind, and those shoes by be uncomfortable considering you will probably walk a lot and be standing, I suggest some comfortable tennis shoes, (no ones gonna see them) (except your friends maybe) but Comfort always comes first at a concert, trust me.
