It’s a matter of corporate ignorance and stupidity. ALL word processors can handle RTF (rich-text format) files–in fact, it’s a more-universal file format than DOC and less complex than PDF.
On-line converters are fine, but it’s better to download a word processor like the OpenOffice.org (OO.o) office suite or AbiWord. Both are free.
The easiest way to convert a RTF file to a DOC file is to install and use the free AbiWord word processor. You will then have a REAL word processor instead of the "crippleware" WordPad. With either OO.o or AbiWord, load the RTF version of the file and use the "Save As" function to save it as a Microsoft-compatible DOC-file.
You ought to get the AbiWord tools and filters, as well–they add to the functionality of the software.
