The 2010 Chevrolet Camaro, 2010 Chevy Camaro doesn’t hit dealerships until February of ‘09, but we recently had the chance to slip behind the wheel of a V6-powered pre-production model. Despite a camouflage paint job and an unfinished interior, our Camaro was dubbed a “golden car” by the engineers; meaning that it was a good representation of what the production car would be like. In the few hours we spent driving through hilly terrain in San Diego, we were especially impressed by the Cadillac-sourced, 300-horsepower V6 that delivered strong acceleration (Chevy estimates zero-to-60-mph times in the low six-second range) along with sounds that evoked World War II-era dive bombers. Camaro fanatics will no doubt gravitate toward the V8 once it arrives, but the base powertrain proved no slouch. The car’s suspension was also impressive, smoothing out rough downtown potholes while still providing responsive handling and great grip. The verdict? Nissan Rogue. After years of watching rival Honda clean up with its compact CR-V crossover, Nissan has finally joined the battle with its own car-based cute-ute, the Rogue. Nissans pricing strategy aims to offer consumers an entry level, bare bones model and then let them decide how much to pay for added features. The Rogues sporty good looks and performance-car inspired handling help it stand out from more mundane offerings. Still, with tough competition from the likes of the Honda CR-V, Saturn VUE and Toyota RAV4, plus the lack of some vital options such as a V6 engine and DVD-based navigation, the Rogues path to success promises to be littered with obstacles. When describing the quintessential American sedan, car enthusiasts no-doubt mention V8 engines and rear-wheel drive.
